Who are the Melungeons?

Prior to the landings at Jamestown by the English settlers in the 1600s, there were sailors of Turkish, Moorish, and Portuguese mixed lineage brought to North America. According to leading Melungeon historian Dr. N. Brent Kennedy , these newcomers married into various cultures and helped to develop what is known today as Melungeons.

The key purpose of the Atlanta Melungeon Project is to help descendants acquire a greater knowledge of their ancestors through genealogical studies. One key to being Melungeon is your surname or the surname of a family member who is directly in your "back" lineage. Your mother, father, grandparents, their parents, etc. are all responsible for your genetic make up. There are several surnames that are Melungeon-related (see list below). Even if genealogy is of no interest to you, knowledge of Melungeon ancestry is key to better understanding the unique physiological makeup that you may possess and pass on to your offspring. There are several illnesses that Melungeons are prone to due to the Turkish component that most of us possess. (see Medical link for more information).

Having one of these surnames in your line does not necessarily mean that you are or are not of Melungeon descent. However if you are interested in finding out more about the Melungeons and your possible connection to them contact, Kevin Hayes at 770-361-6701 or kevinhayes@creativework.org for more information.
